How to Apply for Udyam (MSME) Registration Online — and What It Gets You

Free, paperless, and done in about fifteen minutes with just Aadhaar and PAN. The actual form, the classification thresholds, and the four benefits that make it worth having rather than just having.

Udyam registration is the easiest useful thing on this list. It is free, it takes about fifteen minutes, it needs no documents uploaded, and it unlocks a set of benefits that includes one — the 45-day payment rule — with real teeth.

It is also widely registered for and then never used, because most enterprises never find out what it actually gives them.

Who can register

Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing, production, processing or preservation of goods, or in providing or rendering services, classified on the composite criteria of investment in plant and machinery or equipment and turnover:

  • Micro — within the micro limits for both investment and turnover
  • Small — within the small limits for both
  • Medium — within the medium limits for both

The thresholds have been revised more than once, most recently with effect from the 2025 Budget announcements, so check the current notified figures on the portal rather than relying on a number in an article. What does not change is the structure: both criteria have to be satisfied, and exceeding either one moves you up a category.

Eligible forms: proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private or public limited company, one person company, co-operative society, Hindu undivided family, trust, and society.

What you need before you start

Genuinely very little:

  • Aadhaar number — of the proprietor for a proprietorship, of the managing partner for a partnership, of the karta for an HUF, and of the authorised signatory for a company, LLP, co-operative, society or trust
  • PAN — of the enterprise, except for a proprietorship where the proprietor's PAN is used
  • GSTIN, where you are liable to be registered under GST
  • the enterprise's bank account details
  • the date of commencement of business, and the number of persons employed
  • the NIC code for your activity

No documents are uploaded. Investment and turnover are pulled from the PAN-linked income tax and GST data, which is why the PAN and GSTIN have to be correct — the registration is only as good as the data behind it.

The Aadhaar-linked mobile number is where the OTP goes. Use the right person's. An enterprise registered on a former accountant's Aadhaar is a genuine problem to unwind later.

The step-by-step

  1. Go to udyamregistration.gov.in — the official portal, and the only one that is free.
  2. Choose "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME".
  3. Enter the Aadhaar number and the name exactly as on the Aadhaar, and validate the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  4. Select the type of organisation and enter the PAN. For anything other than a proprietorship, the PAN is validated and the ITR and GST data are fetched against it.
  5. Fill in the enterprise details: name, plant or office addresses including any additional units, the date of commencement, the bank account and IFSC.
  6. Select the NIC code for your principal activity, and whether it is manufacturing or services. You can add more than one activity.
  7. Enter the number of persons employed, and the investment and turnover figures where the form asks for them.
  8. Tick the declaration and submit with the final OTP.
  9. The Udyam Registration Number is generated, and the Udyam Registration Certificate is available to download, with a QR code that links to the enterprise's details.

Already registered under the old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum? Those registrations ceased to be valid and had to be migrated. If you still hold only a UAM, register afresh under Udyam using the option for enterprises already having a UAM registration.

What it actually gets you

Four things matter. The rest is marginal.

1. The 45-day payment rule — the one with teeth

Under the MSMED Act, a buyer must pay a micro or small enterprise within the agreed period, and in any event not later than 45 days from acceptance of the goods or services. Where there is no written agreement, the period is 15 days.

Late payment attracts interest at three times the bank rate, compounded monthly, and that interest is not deductible for the buyer.

The provision that gives this real force is Section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act: a buyer who pays a micro or small enterprise beyond that limit loses the deduction for the expense in the year of accrual — and unlike every other clause of Section 43B, paying before the return due date does not save it. The full mechanics are in our post on the 45-day MSME rule.

The practical consequence for you as a supplier: your corporate customers now have a tax reason to pay you on time, and your Udyam certificate is what puts you in that category. Send it to them. Put the registration number on your invoices.

Disputes over delayed payment go to the MSME Samadhaan portal and the Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Council.

2. Collateral-free lending

Priority sector lending classification, and eligibility under the Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises, which guarantees a portion of a lender's exposure and is the usual basis on which a bank lends to a small enterprise without collateral.

If you are approaching a bank, the Udyam number belongs in the application. What the bank then reads is the subject of our post on CMA data.

3. Public procurement

Exemption from earnest money deposit in many central government tenders, registration on GeM, and the benefit of the public procurement policy under which central ministries, departments and public sector undertakings have a mandated share of procurement from micro and small enterprises, with a sub-target for enterprises owned by scheduled caste and scheduled tribe entrepreneurs and by women.

4. Scheme eligibility

Interest subvention, technology upgradation support, participation in trade fairs, the ZED certification scheme, state-level incentives on electricity tariff and stamp duty, and reimbursement of ISO certification charges. Most state industrial policies make Udyam registration a precondition, so it is the gateway to the state benefits as much as the central ones.

What it does not get you

  • it is not a licence to operate. A food business still needs FSSAI, a factory still needs a factory licence, a shop still needs shops-and-establishment registration;
  • it does not exempt you from GST, income tax or ROC compliance;
  • it does not protect your brand — that is a trademark;
  • it is not a loan. It makes you eligible for schemes; it does not disburse anything.

What if something goes wrong?

  • PAN validation fails — the name against the PAN does not match what you entered. Correct it to match the income tax record exactly.
  • OTP not received — the mobile is not linked to that Aadhaar. Update it at an Aadhaar centre; there is no way round it on the portal.
  • Wrong details submitted — log in on the portal with your Udyam number and the OTP and update the registration. There is no fee.
  • Classified in the wrong category — classification comes from the ITR and GST data against your PAN. If that data is wrong, the fix is at source: file or revise correctly, and the classification refreshes.
  • A customer refuses to accept your MSME status — give them the certificate with its QR code, which they can verify on the portal. That is also the document their auditor will want for Section 43B(h).

Frequently asked questions

Is there any fee for Udyam registration?

None. The government portal charges nothing and the registration is fully online and paperless. Sites charging a fee for the registration itself are intermediaries, not the government — the official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in.

Can a trader register under Udyam?

Retail and wholesale traders have been allowed to register, but with a narrower set of benefits — the inclusion was principally for priority sector lending purposes rather than for the whole MSME benefit set. If your interest is specifically in the payment-protection provisions, take advice on how they apply to a trading enterprise.

Do I need a GST number to register?

Only if you are liable to be registered under GST. Where you are liable, the GSTIN is required and is validated. An enterprise genuinely below the GST threshold and not otherwise liable can register on PAN and Aadhaar alone.

What if my turnover grows past the limit?

Classification is refreshed from the PAN-linked income tax and GST data, so an enterprise that crosses a threshold is reclassified upward. There is a transition period before the benefits of the lower category fall away, so the change is not abrupt — but it does happen automatically rather than on your application.

A note on accuracy. This post reflects the law as we understood it on 13 Oct 2026. Indian tax and corporate law changes often, and nothing here is advice for your specific case — check the current position, or ask us, before you act on it.
