About Liaison Office Registration in India

A liaison office (also called a representative office) is the lightest way for a foreign company to have a presence in India: it can promote your business, gather market information and act as a communication channel with Indian customers and partners, but it cannot earn any income in India. Permission is granted by the Reserve Bank of India through an Authorised Dealer Category-I bank, after which the office is registered with the Registrar of Companies (ROC). Fastlegal prepares the Form FNC application, coordinates with the bank, completes ROC registration and sets up the annual certifications the office must file. For companies and individuals in Switzerland, Fastlegal runs the entire process remotely: your documents are apostilled in Switzerland, we prepare and file everything with the Indian authorities, and you track each step — and pay — from your dashboard in Zurich hours.

From Switzerland to India: what to know

  • Documents issued in Switzerland (parent-company incorporation certificate, board resolution, director passports and address proofs) are legalised by apostille (hague convention): notarise the document before a notary public in switzerland → obtain an apostille from the designated competent authority in switzerland.
  • India and Switzerland have a double-taxation avoidance agreement (DTAA) in force. Dividends, royalties, fees and interest paid to the Swiss parent may qualify for treaty rates on production of a tax residency certificate and Form 10F — we confirm the applicable rate for your structure.
  • Our working hours (10am–7pm IST) are roughly 5:30 am–2:30 pm in Zurich. We schedule calls inside that overlap or at a time that suits you.
  • Fees are invoiced in INR and can be paid by CHF card (your bank converts) or by wire transfer to our Indian bank account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to come to India for Liaison Office?↓

No. Everything is done remotely for clients in Switzerland. Signatures are handled with digital signature certificates and apostilled documents; we represent you before the Indian authorities.

How are my Switzerland documents legalised for India?↓

Switzerland is party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so each document is notarised and then apostilled by the competent authority in Switzerland. India accepts apostilled documents without further embassy attestation. We send you a checklist of exactly which documents need this.

Can I pay from Switzerland?↓

Yes. You pay in INR by international card (CHF is converted by your bank) or by wire transfer; the GST invoice appears in your dashboard immediately.

When can we talk?↓

Our team works 10am–7pm IST, which is about 5:30 am–2:30 pm in Zurich. Book a call inside that window or tell us a time that suits you.

What can a liaison office do in India?↓

It can represent the parent company, promote exports and imports, promote technical or financial collaboration, and act as a communication channel. It cannot carry on any commercial or industrial activity or earn income in India; all its expenses must be met by inward remittances from the parent.

Is my company eligible?↓

The RBI expects a profitable track record in the home country and a minimum net worth, as prescribed in its current guidelines for liaison offices. Companies that do not meet these may still be considered if the parent provides a letter of comfort, subject to RBI's discretion.

How long does approval take?↓

Plan for 8–12 weeks in total: the AD bank and RBI typically take several weeks to review Form FNC, and ROC registration and tax IDs follow approval. Timelines depend on the regulator and are not guaranteed.

Do I need to visit India?↓

No. Documents are apostilled or attested by the Indian embassy in your country and uploaded to your dashboard. Your authorised representative in India signs locally where a wet signature is needed.

For how long is the permission valid?↓

Under current rules a liaison office is generally permitted for three years at a time (shorter for certain sectors), and can apply for renewal through the AD bank before expiry. We remind you ahead of the renewal date.
